Estimating Manager

Objective

The Estimating Manager position is responsible for directing the estimating team to ensure proposals are supplied to Paintearth customers timely and accurately.

Responsibility

Reporting to the President, your key responsibilities will include:

1. Develop a quoting system to ensure quotes can be produced quickly and accurately.
2. Ensure the right estimating team is in place to meet quote requirements such as skill set, number of team members, etc.
3. Develop tools for the sales team such as standard quotes, options templates and technical data on our packages.
4. Provide a strategy to quote customers with larger detailed specifications.
5. Provide training to the estimating team.
6. Prepare quotations as a senior estimator.
7. Develop (or decline) a quote which is achievable and which accurately identifies expected costs.
8. Liaison with Shop, Scheduling, QC, Design, etc. to ensure that an achievable delivery is stated.
9. Develop a weekly ‘estimating schedule’ for priority list to sales team and estimators.
10. Evaluate the performance of the estimating team such as quote accuracy, on time quote delivery, win/loss ratios, etc.
11. After the contract is awarded, support the Project Manager in the project phase as required.
12. Check quotations prepared by Estimator(s).
13. Be aware of supply chain trends – cost increases, etc. and alternative suppliers and products (corresponding through purchasing).
14. Maintain customer preference/spec database for quoting.

Approval Needed

1. Any request for nonstandard margins from Sales – as per approval process.
2. Any scope of work, which is considered technically or financially risky – as per approval process.
3. Hiring of new staff –Surface Sales Manager approval.

Measures

1. Accuracy of quotes issued.
2. Number of quotes issued, and $ value.
3. % Of quotes issued on time as per Sales requests.
4. Win/loss success ratio.
5. Number of standard models complete with spec sheets, options and price lists.
6. Number of declined quotes due to restrictions in estimating department.

Feedback

1. Margin vs. sold, monthly, as reported by Project Managers.
2. Number of quotes issued and total $ value, monthly per report.
3. On time delivery, % of quotes, monthly per report.
4. Success ration, % quotes won compared to total issues, monthly per report.
5. Number of standard models completed with documentation and price lists, updated quarterly.

Qualifications

1. Previous estimating/applications position a requirement.
2. Good technical knowledge of typical products and their applications.
3. Good written and verbal communications skills.
4. A post-secondary diploma or degree is desirable.
5. Must be well organized with very good time management skills.

Working conditions

Work will normally be performed in Calgary head office, little or no physical work and only occasional travel is required to our Halkirk facility and Edmonton.
